School's Started!!--and with that we shift gears!

School has started and fall is approaching!  Our watermelon and cantaloupe have run their course, and the summer season is winding down for us.  We continue to have many tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and some other veggies.

With the school schedule starting again, we are going to be shifting gears with the way you get your produce.  We will not be setting any more stands out this year.  We will start again next summer with the stands.  We have appreciated each of you that helped make those so successful in our first year and look forward to it again next year.

We will continue delivering fresh produce to you.  We offer free delivery to the Mid-Buchanan and St. Joseph Christian Schools.  You may also come to our home to pick up your orders too.  We will deliver locally as well.  We add a $2 delivery charge for all local deliveries under $10.00.

You may order by email to reynoldsvoga@gmail.com
You may also call us at  816-797-4788 (Angela Voga), 816-387-3159 (Joe Voga) or (816) 238-3253 (Karl and Connie Reynolds)

Weekly Update!

After another dry week, we find ourselves blessed with an abundance of fine produce.   Some of our plants are showing stress, and it's not possible to keep things watered in this kind of drought, but we are still doing well through it all.

We have more cantaloupe and watermelon this week, plus a couple of new offerings such as Butternut Squash and Eggplant.

We have decided to set up our stand at the Car City lot across from the South Belt Applemarket store each Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 AM-1:00 PM, and Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM until the new school year begins.  We will also be set up at the Farris Truck Stop in Faucett, tomorrow, July 21 from 9:00-noon.

As always, those of you who are local to St. Joseph and Buchanan County can get your produce delivered to your home by emailing us or calling us (816) 238-4136.

One of our earliest promises was to offer local, quality produce at grocer prices, and we work hard to honor that.  We don't always promise to be the lowest price, but we will stake our name on the best price.  Karl and Joe visited Applemarket this afternoon and saw they had green (unripe) cantaloupe for $2.00 on their produce sale this weekend.  We believe our $2.50 price (which is our regular price) is competitive since our cantaloupe are ready to eat today.  We also don't believe you should pay $3-4 as you would for the same quality produce at the Farmers Market or other stands just down the road from ours.  Additionally, our tomatoes are local (really local), and not shipped from Arkansas, Canada, or grown hydroponically.  As far as we know, we are the only stand in town that is regularly selling locally grown produce at grocer prices.

We thank each of you that have made our first year such as great success, even in the midst of one of the worst droughts in the past century.  We look forward to continuing to serve you and appreciate your telling others about our new endeavor.

Melons Tomorrow!

We will have our Car City stand up tomorrow morning from at least 8:00 am-1:00 pm, and we will have some melons there!  Stop by and check them out.
Elizabeth Voga poses with a cucumber she picked!

We continue to have more tomatoes and a few winter squash as well.  If you have never tried spaghetti squash, then you are missing out on a low-carb alternative to spaghetti.  The flesh of the squash comes off the rind looking just like spaghetti.  All four of the Voga kids liked it.  Yours might too!  Check out this link for more information.

It's still early in the season, but we have some beautiful Amish-grown melons at our stand tomorrow.  The Athena cantaloupe is one of the best early season cataloupes to be found.  And the Stars and Stripes Watermelon will satisfy your early cravings for watermelon too.  (Perfect for the hot week the weatherman is predicting!)

As always you can email your orders to us at reynoldsvoga@gmail.com
or catch us on facebook:  www.facebook.com/reynoldsvoga

Much news for the upcoming week!

It has been a busy, busy week...and a hot one too!  We are thankful to each of you that beat the heat and made it to our stands or ordered from us!  It looks like the weather will be a little more tolerable next week, but we really need the rain to get the week started.  Despite our best efforts of pumping water into our tomato patch, our tomato plants are still very much in need of a good rain.  Nothing works as well a nice slow rain.

Super Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes are
beginning to ripen!
We will have more sweet corn available tomorrow at our stands, and then next week we will have very limited availability.  We have sold a lot of sweet corn this week.  Our patch is nearly empty!

Our tomatoes are starting to ripen, so we should have plenty of tomatoes for you and your family beginning this week.  We have a lot of cherry tomatoes already and they are SWEET!  It's hard for us to keep from eating them all at the stand on these hot days!

Because of the heat, there are few items we are no longer able to provide or that will be ending this week.  We have no more green onions.  There will be more in the fall.  We are also picking that last of our beets this week.  We have some beautiful beets ready for our Car City stand tomorrow.

Speaking of stands, we will be at the Car City Body Lot across from the South Belt Apple Market tomorrow from at least 8:00-1:00.  We may be there longer if we have customers and can stand the heat in the afternoon.  We just picked everything this evening so come early to get the best of what we have before it gets hot!  We may also have another stand up tomorrow as well.  We will post that on our Facebook page tomorrow when we are sure of the location and times.

Finally, visit Milbourne's Restaurant in Faucett this Sunday for their noon buffet.  They will be serving some of our delicious Sweet Corn.  You'll want to get there early before it's all gone.  (Just don't tell the preacher to cut it short on Sunday!)

And, as always, we would be happy to deliver fresh produce to your door.  Just take a look at our price and product list below and let us know what you would like.  There is no delivery charge for local orders over $10.00.

Sweet Corn!!!

It has finally arrived...our sweet corn is ready for harvest!   Some of you that get our home deliveries and made pre-orders have already gotten a taste of it this evening.   We have 1 1/2 acres of Bodacious Sweet Corn to pick over the next couple of weeks and just in time for your Fourth of July Celebrations.   Let us know how much you want and we will be happy to deliver to you.

You may also find us beginning tomorrow morning at the Car City Body Lot across from the South Belt Apple Market.  We will set up our stand at 8:00 AM and will continue as long as our supplies last.  Our opening price is $4 per baker's dozen.  We think you will not be disappointed!

As the corn continues to mature, we will be setting more stands, and may likely have several stands each day in different locations.  Stay tuned for more information.  We will let you know where you may find us each day!

New Price List, Schedule and Kale!!!

Cylindra and Detroit Dark Red Beets from our garden.
Cylindras are great for canning as
they make uniform slices.
We have our new price lists up for the week.  We are later in posting it this week and will be adjusting our schedule to publish on Friday each week.  For a lot of reasons, it is going to work better for us to publish at the end of the week instead of the beginning.  The current price list will continue through June 8.

We have several new things coming on and some on their way out.  Our lettuces are diminishing due to the heat.  We do have some new lettuces that are still tender and sweet, but supplies are going to be limited.  We also are seeing our radishes and spinach beginning to struggle with the heat. Hopefully, tonight's rain will help everything.

We have Red Pontiac and Yukon Gold potatoes available now.  Let us know when you order if you want small new potatoes or larger potatoes.  We will fill your order as you wish.

Additionally we have Kale.  Several of you have asked about it and it's looking really nice. The rains will help it too!

We continue to deliver for free to Mid-Buchanan School and at St. Joseph Christian school during our son's baseball practices.   Just email or call us to set up your order.

Our new price list can be found HERE!

New Price List plus Cherries!

Montmorency Cherries on
our tree!
One of the blessings of the early and warm spring was a delightful abundance of cherries on our Montmorency Cherry tree!   I have never seen so many cherries!   Angela usually puts cherries away to make Joe's pies, but there are too many to keep to ourselves.

The Montmorency cherry is a sour cherry which is perfect for pies!   If you have someone who likes cherry pies, these cherries are the ones to have!

Some of the cherries Angela canned for this winter
and the pie she made made for Joe.
Because school is out, and it is too early yet for our truck stands, we will be offering several delivery options.

First, we will be delivering to St. Joseph Christian School through Wednesday for free.  We will also continue to deliver to Mid-Buchanan School for free as well since Joe will be there throughout the week.  Just call or email to make arrangements.

We will also deliver to your home (in St. Joseph Area).  Orders delivered to you less than $10.00 will have a $2.00 fuel charge added to the order.

You may also arrange to meet us at our homes to pick up your produce as well.

We continue to have some lettuces, and broccoli, but they will in more limited supply this week.  Be sure to call soon if you want some.   We will not likely have enough to last all week.

You can find our updated price and product list HERE!

Call us (816)-238-4136 or email:  reynoldsvoga@gmail.com to place your order!

Broccoli and Beets!!!

After several internet troubles last week, our price list has been updated for this week.  Hopefully we can get back on schedule with our regular updates.

We have some early broccoli ready.  Availability will be limited this week, but we will offer it on a first-come, first-served basis.

We also have beets.  There are two varieties available to you. The Detroit Dark Red is a round beet with a deep red color.  The Cylindra is a cylindrical beet which makes more uniform slices---great for canning!

Additionally, we are coming to the end of our lettuce as the temperatures begin to rise.  If you haven't ordered a salad mix and want one, this would be the week to do it!

In addition we have nice patch of spinach we are picking from.  It is great with a salad, wilted, or steamed/boiled with some vinegar.  The lettuces are beautiful right now, too!

We are also offering Rainbow Swiss Chard this week.  If you like greens, you cannot beat the taste of Swiss Chard and the rainbow variety is filled with color!

New Price List and Turnip Greens!

Special thanks to Lisa Webster for taking this great
picture of the vegetables she ordered.
Week two is upon us.  Thankfully, we were spared the terrible storms others to the west of us in Kansas experienced.  Though it was a bit windy, we were allowed some nice rains.  The forecast looks great this week and we will be busy at the end of the week getting much more of the garden in to handle the volumes needed this summer.

We continue to have onions, greens and some radishes for sale.  Check the link below for our latest price list.  All orders are by phone, email or personal contact at this point.  Let us know if you would like something on our list.

Unbelievable Response and Email Trouble

What a great start we've had this week!  Thanks to all of our early customers, we have nearly sold out our supply this week.  We expect to have much more coming on next week.  A lot of great feedback has been given to us on the French Breakfast radishes.  They were "prime" radishes.  I don't think you could have found a tastier, prettier radish anywhere!  There will be more of them coming.

Also, several people on our email list have not been receiving our weekly emails.  If you are one of those that have emailed us, or filled out our form on this site, and not yet received an email, check your "Junk" mail folder or "spam" folder.  Some mail reader programs are putting our emails there since we have so many people we are sending to.  You may also be able to add our email address, reynoldsvoga@gmail.com to your "safe sender" list.

You can always check this blog and our facebook page for the latest updates too!

Radishes and Greens for Sale!

Grace holds a bouquet of French Breakfast
Radishes picked yesterday!!
We have the first of our early greens ready.  Baby lettuces and other greens, as well as radishes are coming on now.  There's hardly anything better than a fresh spring salad!

We have a couple of spring salad mixes for you to choose from, a robust mix including arugula, oak lettuce and  baby spinach, as well as a milder mix of traditional baby lettuces.

One of my favorite greens is one you can't buy in most stores--fresh baby turnip greens.  They are so tender and tasty!  Just boil them for a couple of minutes and mix a little bacon or ham into them, and serve them with some vinegar!!  Delicious!

All of our prices are comparable to grocer prices, and when you figure in freshness and quantity we beat them!

Since many of those who have already expressed interest in our produce have connections to the Mid-Buchanan and St. Joseph Christian Schools, we will arrange to meet you there if that is convenient for you.  Just let us know what you want!

In addition, we do have a few plants available for transplanting, too.

Busy Time!

What a busy, busy time of year!  With the unseasonable warm weather we're experiencing, we're seeing green everywhere!  The grass is green, trees are budding, plants are being transplanted and seeds are sprouting throughout our gardens.  We had nice rains last week.  This is a dream for gardeners in Northwest Missouri!

We stay cognizant of the fact that a cold spell could still come and give us all kinds of trouble, but we are going ahead and planting some things much earlier than usual in the hope that it does not turn cold.  If it does, we have only lost some seed and time.  It can be replanted.  It the weather stays nice, we will all be able to enjoy fresh, local produce earlier than usual!

So far we have planted in our gardens or greenhouse:

  • Arugula
  • Beets-(Detroit Dark Red and Cylindra)
  • Broccoli-(Packman and Premium Crop)
  • Cabbage-(Stonehead)
  • Carrots-(Imperators)
  • Chard-(Rainbow)
  • Cucumbers(National Pickling and Straight Eights)
  • Eggplant
  • Herbs-(Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage)
  • Kale
  • Lettuce (Head-Buttercrunch, Iceberg, and Romaine)
  • Lettuce (Leaf-Oak Leaf, Salad Bowl, Mesculin)
  • Mustard
  • Onions-(Green, Yellow, Red and Whites)
  • Peppers-(Hot-Serrano, Anaheim Chili, Jalapeno, Long Red Chili's)
  • Peppers-(Sweet-Banana, Red/Green/Purple/Gold Bells)
  • Potatoes-(Reds and Golds)
  • Radishes-(Red Cherry, Icicle and the huge German Giant)
  • Spinach
  • Squash-(Summer-Zucchini and Yellow Crooknecks)
  • Tomatoes
  • Turnips
  • Watermelons-(Yeah, we're really gambling on the weather here, but why not?)
Stay tuned!

March 12, 2012 News

Each week you will publish a newsletter like this with links to things we like and things you might like.   We will have our PDF newsletter giving you the latest news and pricelists as the season goes on, just like the one below.
This week’s featured product is broccoli.

Broccoli is a cool weather plant that is grown in the spring and fall in our region.  In Northwest Missouri it must be started indoors and transplanted.  Additionally, it does not continue to produce large heads after the first one is picked so we must do a fair bit of planning to ensure we have planted what we will need.  To aid us, we are asking anyone who is interested in bulk broccoli to let us know how much you might want.  A typical head of broccoli will weigh 1.25 to 1.5 pounds.  Broccoli is a great vegetable to freeze and the process is simple.  You can also dehydrate broccoli for use in soups later in the year, too.
Check out the links below to learn more about freezing/dehydrating broccoli as well as some recipes we suggest.

We're Getting Started

Welcome.

We put in our first full day today!  Lot's of things were accomplished (and lot is left to do).  We picked most of our seed up today from our seed company today with only a couple of items on back order.  Karl and Joe started about 400 cole plants (broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower) and a promotional brochure is nearly finished.

The Facebook page is up...check it out at facebook.com/reynoldsvoga.

We encourage everyone interested in the healthiest and tastiest fresh produce in Buchanan County to email us at reynoldsvoga@gmail.com and let us know you would like to get our e-newsletter.  Don't miss out!
